Never Again

by XIONG CHANGNIAN on 2007-02-04 03:59:45

I have been clean from cab driving for 2 years now and my life sucks. I
have no money, no friends, and can't really figure out how to live. I'm
fat and my health is poor. Worse, I have a bad attitude towards work and
I can't figure out how to look for a job, much less actually stay in
one.

However, life sucks much better than it did when I was driving. I drove
cab, on and off -- mostly on -- for 15 years. It took so much out of me
that when I quit, I found I didn't have much left inside.

Still, I'm never driving again. This isn't a promise; it's a fact. I
know now that my life can never get so bad that I have to drive a cab.
Someday I'll die but it won't be behind *that* wheel.

This reads *exactly* like a fellow speaking at an Alcoholics Anonymous
meeting -- and that makes perfect sense, since cab driving is a disease.
Not a job, not an adventure, not a business, not even a gig, scam,
hustle, racket, or ongoing criminal enterprise. It's a disease --
incurable, progressive, and fatal. There is hope and the only solution
is not to drive.

If you've never driven a cab, don't start. If you're driving now, quit.
Quit today. Don't wait until the end of the week or even the end of the
shift. I don't even know if you have to drive it back to the garage.
Just park it, leave the keys on the floor, and call the boss. Tell him
it's over. Walk away and never look back.

Since at least the first month I drove, I've had fares that made me
think, "Forget this. I'm driving; I don't have to ride in this car. I
could pull it over right here, right now, not even say a word. Just turn
it off, get my bag, open the door, and walk out. Nobody can *make* me
drive; I'm doing this to myself." I guess it took me 15 years to get the
message. You don't have to be so dumb.

Thanks for listening.

I dont see it that way at all. My life is much better since I started
driving a cab.
I get out of the house, I get to meet all sorts of people and speak with
them, I make new friends and have a wider circle of friends as well.

I could quit today, but then where would I be? I would have to find some
other venue at which to bring in extra income, and that might entail
actual work! Else I would sit at home and vegitate, and to be honest, I
tried that for a few months and it isnt nice at all.

Because I am driving a cab my circle of awareness is expanded. I am kept
up to date with all the sports, the latest fashion crazes, even the
language that todays youth use.

Driving a cab simply isnt work. In one sense all I do all night is drive
around and collect money. In most respects I am my own boss, I decide
when to take a break, when to sit around, when to become active and
'jump' for trips, when to eat, heck even if I can go home and take a
snooze if I want to.

I learn how to deal effectively with people of various ages and
inclinations. Its a continual learning process, but I think I am getting
better at it. I hone my skills and my memory abilities all the time. To
me some of my biggest 'tips' are "thanks, you taught me a new way home"
or the like.

I love being able to 'decide' whether to charge the customer the full
$9.10 or just say "nine dollars please" - or even to be 'nice' and get
the customer to where they are going, even if they are a buck or two short.

My 'boss' isnt looking over my shoulder, he judges my performance from
afar from the results. As good or better than most other drivers and
with no complaints from consumers.

Driving a cab isnt a disease, its a pleasure. Thats how I see it.

Cheer up my friend. You just had a bad night. I have been at it for 30
years and yes I have had bad and good times. Just remember the those
that you pick up will only be in your cab for the most of 15 min's. Most
people are good people. Yes I hate mean people and they can and will
make you have a bad night. I get upset when business is not out there.
Hold your head up and hang in there.

p.s.. I am the Taxi Santa of Dallas Texas.
