I just started driving taxi. Should be a good night tonight (New Year's
Eve). I'm in Tampa, FL and even here most cab drivers I see are of foreign
descent. It doesn't really bother me. I was just wondering though, why
foreigners flock to taxi driving. You think it would be full of people like
myself just putting themselves through school.

A lot of my downtown driving is by feel, because I just don't have all the
streets and directions (one way etc.) memorized yet. Was it that way with
you all in the beginning?

Anyway I'm liking the job so far, I feel like I'm self employed! Also if you
know of any other cab driver newsgroups or anything let me know.

I drive in Philadelphia and minimum requirements for a driver (unless
you work out a special deal) is about 5 shifts a week. Some of these
guys work 6 and 7 days because most of the companies give you deals on
the lease. Basically, thats more then a full time job, I'd like to see
you squeeze "school" into that schedule. I believe foreigners drive
cabs because most are willing to work insane hours since you can make
insane money, but have no social life. They do this so they can get
ahead quick in a society that requires higher education for the most
part to make a decent wage. Where they come from this just isn't
available to them.

We have a GPS system in our cabs here, but thats new. Listen to
dispatched jobs and whenever possible try to figure out where they are,
if your 'bidding' on your radio work you'll need to be able to quickly
figure out how close you are, experienced cab drivers hold that mic
like its a game show buzzer.

I hate driving a taxi now, just doing it to pay the bills. Its more of
a lifestyle then a job, and I'm sick of driving in circles 12 hours a
day.

Good luck to you, keep your eyes open.. since its up to you to keep
alive out there.
